(Neshaan-e Shir O Khorshid). Instituted by Fath-Ali Shah Qajar in 1808. Type IV. (1872-1939 Issue). A silver star, likely of European manufacture, composed of seven arms, each arm consisting of five faceted rays with one green enamelled ray between each cluster, the central medallion bears a handpainted couchant lion on a green foreground and yellow enamel background with a sun peering behind the lion, the medallion is encircled in two rings of facets, the reverse presents a single pin and dual stay assembly, measures 82mm in diameter, enamels intact, small chip to painting at lions front paw, minimal tarnishing to silver, overall very fine condition.
Footnote: The Order of the Lion and Sun was originally instituted by Fath-Ali Shah Qajar, the second Qajar Emperor of Iran, in 1808. The Order was conferred upon senior government officers and foreigners in recognition of admirable and distinguished service provided to the State. In 1939, Reza Shah Pahlavi replaced the Order with the Order of Homayoun (Order of August).
