1914-15 Star (PLY. 16610. PTE. R. MASHFORD, R.M.L.I.); British War and Victory Medals (PLY 16610 PTE. R. MASHFORD. R.M.L.I.); Defence Medal; War Medal 1939-45; Royal Naval Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, George V (PLY. 16610 R. MASHFOR A/CPL. R.M.); and Air Efficiency Award, George VI (799576 CPL. R. MASHFORD. R.A.F.V.R.). Naming is officially impressed on the three WWI medals and RNLSGC Medal; privately engraved on AEA. Board mounted, extremely fine. Also included are two duotang folders with his military biography, copy of his service record and eleven ship photographs. Footnote: Reginald Mashford was born on September 19, 1896 in Plumpton, Plymouth, Devon, England. When he enlisted at the Recruit Depot in Plymouth on February 26, 1914, he stated his trade as Grocers Assistant. He served on the Cruiser H.M.S. Devonshire, from 1914-1916, which was in the 3rd Cruiser Squadron in the Grand Fleet. His next ship, the Battleship H.M.S. Thunderer was in the 2nd Battleship Squadron of the Grand Fleet, serving on her from 1917-1919. He possibly saw service in Gallipoli. He did serve enough time in the Royal Marines to earn his RNLSCG Medal. Post WWI, he was assigned to a variety of ships: H.M.S. Ajax (1919 & 1923, Battleship), Egmont (1919 & 1920, Depot Ship), Centurian (1920, Battleship), Thunderer (1920, Battleship), Emperor of India (1921, Battleship), Cairo (1924, Cruiser), Dunedin (1928, Cruiser), Diomede (1929 & 1930, Cruiser), Pembroke (1929, Shore Base), Carysfort (1930, Cruiser) and Philomel (1932, Cruiser). He was released from the Royal Marines on November 15, 1933, as he was "Below physical standard for Royal Marines". On March 8, 1939, he enlisted in the Royal Air Force Voluntary Reserve as an Aircraftsman 2nd Class and rose to become a Corporal. Likely due to his age (42), he was stationed in the United Kingdom throughout the Second World War. In September 1942, the Air Efficiency Award was instituted, to reward long and meritorious service in the Auxiliary and Volunteer Air Forces, with ten years' "Efficient Service". It is obvious that his time in the Royal Marines likely counted towards this decoration. In all, he spent thirty-one years in uniform. Mashford passed away on July 14, 1952 at the age of 55.
