1st British Columbia Regiment General's Visor - This cap is dark forest green wool, displaying a 47 mm ribbed black band around the circumference, accented with black piping along the top edge, with a slight rise from the back to front forming a moderate peak. The front is adorned on the ribbed black band with a 46 mm x 57 mm bronze gilt and black enamelled 1st British Columbia Regiment Cap Badge, held in place via lugs and pin on the reverse. The chinstrap rests upon the visor and is fabricated from a smooth black leather, with support loops, and is attached to blackened bronze British Columbia coat-or-arms buttons on either side. The visor itself has a black leather patterned upper with black wool embroidered wreathing along the front edge, indicating the rank to be that of Major. The underside of the visor is a lacquered green synthetic material and in combination with the reinforced framework, gives the visor a very strong presence. There is semblence of white paint on the visor's underside, possibly from personalized naming but has faded and worn with time. Inside, the leather sweatband exhibits light discolouration and cracking from active use but remains relatively supple and intact. It is named in black ink "Major H. Pentreath" on the right side of the sweatband with the initials "HP" scratched below. It is also named in black ink "Major H Pentreath" on the brushed underside of the sweatband on the left side. The rear ribbon of the sweatband is intact and bow tied, with the sizing label inscribed "CANADA 7 1/2" nearby. It is maker marked in gold ink "WELSH & JEFFERIES Ltd, 15, DUKE STREET, St. James' S.W." (London, England) on the cap's maroon fabric dome. The cap measures 255 mm x 270 mm x 95 mm in height overall, exhibiting nice texture in the wool, quality stitching, beautiful detail in the wreathing and cap badge, and other than the sweatband and underside of the visor, is free of discolouration and wear, in extremely fine condition. Footnote: Harold Edwin Anson Pentreath was born on April 13, 1891 in Vancouver, British Columbia. He signed his CEF Attestation Paper on June 10, 1916 in Vancouver, at the age of 25, enlisting as a Private, stating that he was married to Ethel Beatrice Pentreath, that he had sixteen years' previous military service with the 6th Regiment The Duke of Connaught's Own Rifles as a Lieutenant and that his trade was that of Bank Clerk. While in the French theatre in 1917, Lieutenant Pentreath replaced Major R. J. Burde, M.C, who left for England on a three months' exchange. Pentreath had come over as a Private, but had obtained a commission in England, reporting for duty with the 102nd Canadian Infantry Battalion. After the Great war, Lieutenant Pentreath was awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Long Service Medal. He later obtained the rank of Major, where he was awarded with the Efficiency Decoration. Neither of the awards are included with the visor cap.
