A First War Canadian Railway Troops 10th Battalion Cap Badge
Browning copper, unmarked, 40.7 mm x 46.5 mm, intact lugs and pin, very light contact, residue in the recessed areas from cleaning, near extremely fine. Footnote: In the latter part of 1916, it was agreed that Canada would furnish five battalions of construction workers to be known as the Canadian Railway Troops. In March 1917, it was decided to increase this number to ten battalions. By June, all the battalions were at work in France. The 256th Battalion was raised in Central Ontario with mobilization headquarters at Toronto under the authority of G.O. 69, July 15, 1916. The Battalion sailed March 28, 1917 under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel W.A. McConnell with a strength of 18 officers and 531 other ranks. The Battalion served in France as the 10th Battalion, Canadian Railway Troops. The first badge issued had the 256th Infantry Battalion designation, the second badge issued had "10" overlying the "256" designation, whereas the third badge issued had the "256" and "Canada" removed, replaced with "10" and "C.R.T." respectively, as per the badge presented here.
