A Rare 1870 Fenian Raid Period Canadian Five Province Ensign
Screen-printed in red, green, yellow, navy blue and black inks on white cotton, illustrating a Union Jack on the canton (upper left), along with the Canadian coat-of-arms used between 1870 and 1873 on the field at the far right, the coat-of-arms bearing the provincial arms of Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Manitoba, inside an open-ended wreath composed of a branch of maple leaves at the left and a branch of oak leaves at the right, the branches joined with a red bow-tied ribbon at the junction, the coat-of-arms surmounted by the Victorian crown, hoist sleeve in white cotton with large grommets at either end, the top grommet with a string attached, stamped in blue ink with faded numerals beside "INCHES" above "GUARANTEED FAST COLORS" on the reverse of the hoist sleeve, 890 mm x 1,320 mm, very lightly soiled, without holes and interruptions in the fabric, near extremely fine.
