A Boer War & First Medal Memorial Group to the 78th Infantry - Queen's South Africa Medal, 4 Clasps - CAPE COLONY, ORANGE FREE STATE, SOUTH AFRICA 1901, SOUTH AFRICA 1902 (929 3rd CL: TPR: R. DAVIDSON. S.A.C.); British War Medal (186550 SJT. R. DAVIDSON. 78-CAN.INF.); Victory Medal (186550 SJT. R. DAVIDSON. 78-CAN.INF.); and His Majesty's Army & Navy & Colonial Forces Veterans Association Medal 1901 (sterling silver, engraved "R. DAVIDSON" on the edge, maker marked "D.R. DINGWALL" and marked "STERLING" on the reverse, 38 mm). Naming is officially impressed on the three war medals. Unmounted, original ribbons, dark patinas on the two silver war medals, light contact, near extremely fine. Accompanied by a Framed Photograph of Davidson's Grave Marker with Floral Tribute in Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension in Somme, France (black and white, photograph measuring 206 mm x 350 mm in a 395 mm x 540 mm wooden frame, under glass, covering loss on the lower part of the frame, identification tag and sticker inscribed "Picture Framing Department, The T. Footnote: Robert Davidson was born on October 1, 1878 in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of Thomas Davidson and Helen Davidson. He served for three and a half years during the Boer War with the South African Constabulary, earning him the QSA. He signed his Attestation Paper with the 90th Infantry Battalion "Winnipeg Rifles", on October 12, 1915 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, naming his next-of-kin as his wife, Marguerita (Margheurita) Lister Stuart Davidson of St. James, Manitoba, stating his previous military service as one and a half years in the Royal Navy, one year in the O.R.C.P. and three and a half years in the South African Constabulary in the Boer War, that he was Married and that his trade was that of Shipper. The Battalion was raised and mobilized in Winnipeg, Manitoba under the authority of G.O. 151, December 22, 1915 and sailed on June 2, 1916 under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel W.A. Monroe, with a strength of 36 officers and 1,087 other ranks. Sergeant Davidson was transferred to the 78th Infantry Battalion "Winnipeg Grenadiers" before entering the French theatre and suffered gunshot wounds to his left arm and back in March 1918. He died of his wounds on March 7, 1918, at the age of 39 and is buried in Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France, Grave Reference: III. G. 21 (F52). He is commemorated on page 394 of the First World War Book of Remembrance and was awarded the Great War Pair for his service.
