A Canada General Service & Tintype of Recipient - Fenian Raid 1870, (Ens. T.A.Knowlton, 52nd Bn.) Naming is officially impressed, dark patina, extrememly fine. With original paper envelope from Royal Mint. Finely framed tintype, 73.7x63.6mm in cased, clear image, very fine. Footnote: Ensign Thomas Anson Knowlton was born on 22 Aug 1844 in Brome, Quebec. He was the son of Luke and Mary Knowlton from Vermont, USA. Luke Knowlton was the first permanent settler of what is now the village of Knowlton, Quebec in the Eastern Townships. Thomas Knowlton served as an Ensign in the 52nd Brome BN which was headquartered in Knowlton, Quebec in 1869. In the spring of 1870 the Battalion was called out when scouts reported a concentration of Fenians near St Albans, Vermont. The 52nd was ordered to guard points west and east of Frelighsburg. At one point an attack was expected on the Whitney Road two miles south of the village and some companies were concentrated in this area. When the actual attack did take place on 25 May 1870, the Fenians were decisively turned back by the Missisquoi Home Guard and retreated in disarray . The 52nd along with other Militia companies, were moved to the battle site under cover of darkness on the night of 25 May as the Fenians were reported to be regrouping and another attack was expected. They stayed there on alert for several days but no further attacks were made. Following his military service Thomas Anson Knowlton became the proprieter of mills for the manufacture of kindling-wood for the Boston market. He resided on the banks of Brome Lake, in the town of Foster, Quebec. He was the first Knowlton outside the US to join a movement which resulted in the organization of the Knowlton Association of America and the production of its history. He married Sarah D. Foster (daughter of the Hon Asa Belknap Foster Conservative Senator for Bedford, Quebec) on 25 Feb 1868 and they had four children (Laura, Paul, Thomas A. and George). Thomas Knowlton died on 25 Oct 1906 in Guilford, Maine, USA and is buried in Knowlton Cemetery in Knowlton, Quebec. (BCM1134)
