A Dieppe Casualty Memorial Cross & Family IGS Medal - Lance Corporal J. Southwood: India General Service Medal 1854-1895, 1 Clasp - BURMA 1889-92 (740 L/Corpl. J. Southwood 2nd Bn. Devon. Regt.); and Private William J. Southwood, KIA at Dieppe: Canadian Memorial Cross, GRVI (B.66568 Pte. W.J. SOUTHWOOD). Naming is officially engraved in italics, inverted on the IGSM and officially engraved on the CMC. Dark patinas on both, original ribbon on the IGSM, the Cross in its hardshelled case of issue with card, extremely fine. Accompanied by two black and white photographs of the elder Southwood (one of which is inscribed "July 3rd 1926. ages 80. 77" on the reverse) and a newspaper obituary with photograph of the younger Southwood. Footnote: William James Southwood was born on April 13, 1914 in Toronto, Ontario, the son of James Southwood and Alice Elizabeth Southwood. He was educated at Weston Technical School and enlisted with the Royal Regiment of Canada two days after the declaration of war by Canada on September 10, 1939. He was stationed in Iceland with the first unit of Canadians sent there. In December 1940, he was transferred to England. He had written home to his mother, stating "I'm just waiting to take a fling at Jerry (Germans) and get in the scrap." Initially listed as "Missing", he was later declared Killed in Action during the Dieppe Raid on August 19, 1942, at the age of 28. He is remembered with honour in the Dieppe Canadian War Cemetery, Hautot-Sur-Mer, Seine-Maritime, France, Grave Reference: J. 34.
