He signed his Attestation Paper with the 169th Infantry Battalion on August 3, 1915 at Camp Niagara, at the age of 45, stating that he had sixteen years previous military service with the Argyll and Sutherlands Highlanders of Scotland, including the South African campaign, that he was married to Sarah Mitchell of Waterdown, Ontario and that his trade was that of Painter.
