A WWI British War Medal to the 2nd Canadian Infantry; KIA - (A-10028 PTE. R. MASON. 2-CAN.INF.). Naming is officially impressed. Light contact, cleaned, near extremely fine.    Footnote: Robert Mason was born on November 29, 1893 in Scotland. He signed his Attestation Paper as a Private with the 43rd Battalion Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa, on February 26, 1915 in Ottawa, Ontario, at the age of 21, naming his next-of-kin as Jean Mason of Auckland, New Zealand, stating that he was not married, that he had no previous military service and that his trade was that of Teamster. The unit was mobilized for action during the First World War, however, it did not go overseas as a formed unit. Instead, the unit was used to recruit and train soldiers mostly for the 2nd, 38th and 207th Battalions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Mason was with the 2nd Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Eastern Ontario Regiment) when he died on December 29, 1915. He is buried at R.E. Farm Cemetery, near Ieper, Belgium, Grave Reference: III. B. 9. and is commemorated on page 28 of the First World War Book of Remembrance. Mason's service number on the medal and Attestation Paper says "A-10028" but it is recorded on the Collections Canada and Veterans Affairs Canada websites as "410028".
