An Interesting Battle of Ridgeway, Fort Erie, & Stratford Group to Sergeant Sutherland; Queen's Own Rifles
Canada General Service Medal, 1 Clasp - FENIAN RAID 1866 (Sgt. R.W. Sutherland. 2nd. Q.O.R.); Queen's Own Rifles Semi-Centennial Reunion Medal (bronze with red and green enamels, maker marked "P.W. ELLIS & Co" on the reverse, 27.3 mm, with QOR 1869-1919 hanger); 1st Place Gymnastics Medal (silver, engraved on the obverse "FIRST PRIZE FOR GYMNASTICS 28th FEB. 1873" and "WON BY R.W. Sutherland", 43.7 mm, suspended from a lateral bar with chain); along with a Pre-Confederation Queen's Own Rifles Cap Badge (silvered brass, 55.5 mm x 65.7 mm). Board-mounted, very dark patina on the CGSM, original ribbons on the CGSM and the QORSCRM, very light contact, near extremely fine. Accompanied by copies of his Service Records, Fenian Raid Service Application for Grant and a Letter from Sutherland (on his office letterhead, addressed to Colonel Sam Hughes, dated November 25, 1912 at Montreal). (C14) Footnote: Robert W. Sutherland is shown on the roll of the 373 man 2nd (Queen's Own Rifles of Toronto) Battalion and is listed on page 63 of the "Canada General Service Medal Roll, 1866-70" by John Thyen. In the rank of Sergeant, he received the medal with 1866 clasp while with the 2nd (Queen's Own Rifles of Toronto) Battalion, his records indicating he was at Toronto from May 17 to May 24, 1866, at Port Colborne from June 7 to June 18, 1866 and is documented as having been at the Battle of Ridgeway, at Fort Erie and at Stratford in 1866. He was a resident of Montreal, Quebec when he filed a Fenian Raid Service Application for Grant, under the provisions of the Fenian Raid Volunteer Bounty Act, on September 13, 1912. Sutherland was in New York in the Summer of 1912, selling timber and pulp limits, then returned to Montreal in the Fall, writing a letter to Colonel Sam Hughes in Ottawa, his "old Toronto friend", seeking help for his aforementioned application.(C:14)
