A bronze Maltese cross with ball finials, the arms engraved R D A CANADA, with the central medallion featuring a royal crown surrounded by an exterior wreath, the reverse is plain with engraved inscription “Dominion Prize Lt. Colonel F.G Marchand 21st Battalion V.M 1868”, the cross is surmounted by crossed rifles with a slot for ribbon, measures 43.5mm (w) x 58.4mm (h), weighs 14.4 grams, dark patina, light wear, in very fine condition.
Footnote: The 21st Battalion Volunteer Militia or “The Richelieu Light Infantry” was established on May 25, 1863. F. G Marchand served with the 21st Battalion, as a Major in 1866, and Lieutenant Colonel in 1868. He retired from the military in 1880.
