(174970 SJT. E.S. BARRETT. C.M.G. BDE.). Naming is officially impressed. Replacement ribbon, dark patina, extremely fine. Footnote: Edwin Sydney Barrett was born on June 7, 1886 in London, England. He was a resident of Hamilton, Ontario when he signed his Attestation Paper (174970) with the 86th Infantry Battalion "86th Machine Gun Battalion", on September 27, 1915 in Hamilton, at the age of 29, naming his next-of-kin as his wife, Florence Barrett of Hamilton, stating that he had no previous military service, that he was Married and that his trade was that of Machinist. The Battalion was raised in Southern Ontario with mobilization headquarters at Hamilton, Ontario under the authority of G.O. 151, December 22, 1915. The Battalion sailed May 22, 1916 under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel W.W. Stewart with a strength of 36 officers and 1,072 other ranks. In England, the Battalion was reorganized as the Canadian Machine Gun Depot. Barrett was discharged from service upon demobilization on April 25, 1919 at No. 2 District Depot in Toronto, Ontario, credited with having served in England and France.
