George V (958 Pte. W. READER). Naming is engraved. Dark patina, light contact, near extremely fine. In its hardshelled case of issue, soiled medal bed, fraying in the fabric over the hinge, scuffed exterior, case fine. Footnote: William Reader was born on December 7, 1876 in Marden, Kent, England, the son of Henry Reader and Jane Reader. He was also the husband of Elizabeth Mary Hobart (formerly Reader) of Hackney, London, England. Reader had previously served with the Royal West Kent Regiment in the South African Campaign (Second Boer War), where he earned the Queen's South Africa and King's South Africa medals. Reader signed his Attestation Paper as a Private (958) with the Canadian Dragoons (1st Armoured Regiment) CEF on November 26, 1914, at Pond Farm Camp, Salisbury Plain, England, at the age of 37, naming his next-of-kin as his mother, Mrs. H. Reader of Yalding, Kent, stating that he had nine years' previous service with Royal West Kent Regiment, that he was not married and that his trade was that of Rancher/Prospector. Private William Reader, Canadian Dragoons (1st Armoured Regiment) died on June 5, 1915, at the age of 38 and is buried in Brown’s Road Military Cemetery, Festubert, Pas de Calais, France, Grave Reference: V. F. 5 and is commemorated on page 33 of the First World War Book of Remembrance.
