A WWI British War Medal to the 22nd Infantry Battalion; KIA - A. Edouard Nelson was born on September 30, 1897 in Montreal, Quebec, the son of John Nelson and Philomene Nelson. He signed his Attestation Paper as a Private (120016) with the 69th Infantry Battalion, on August 3, 1915 in Montreal, eight weeks shy of his 18th birthday, naming his next-of-kin as his brother, J. Nelson, stating that he had one months' previous militia service with the 5th Carabiniers, that he was Single and that his trade as that of Plumber. The Battalion was raised in Quebec with mobilization headquarters at Montreal under authority of G.O. 103A, August 15, 1915. The Battalion sailed April 17, 1916 under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel J.A. Dansereau with a strength of 34 officers and 1,023 other ranks. The Battalion was absorbed into the 10th Reserve Battalion in England and was later transferred to the 22nd Infantry Battalion "Canadiens Francais". Nelson died on October 4, 1916, at the age of 19 (although the official government site states that he was 17) and is remembered with honour on the Vimy Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. He is commemorated on page 141 of the First World War Book of Remembrance
