A First War Canadian Pair to the 19th Infantry Battalion - British War Medal (228245 PTE. J.H. BLAKE. 19-CAN.INF.); and Victory Medal (228245 PTE. J.H. BLAKE. 19-CAN.INF.). Naming is officially impressed. Un-mounted, very dark patina on the BWM, edge nicks, light contact, very fine. Footnote: James Harvey Blake was born on September 12, 1889 in Woodbridge, Ontario. He was a resident of Toronto, Ontario when he signed his Attestation Paper with the 201st Infantry Battalion "Toronto Light Infantry", on March 29, 1916, in Toronto, at the age of 26, naming his next-of-kin as his wife, Mary Agatha Blake, stating that he had no previous military service, that he was Married and that his trade was that of Salesman. It was noted during his medical examination that he had a "strawberry on (his) left buttock". The Battalion was raised and mobilized in Toronto, Ontario under the authority of G.O. 69, July 15, 1916. The Commanding Officer of the Battalion was Lieutenant-Colonel E.W. Hagarty, however, insufficient numbers of recruits resulted with the Battalion being disbanded in Canada and the enlisted men absorbed into the 170th and 198th Infantry Battalions. Private Blake was subsequently transferred to the 198th Infantry Battalion "Canadian Buffs", the Battalion having been raised and mobilized in Toronto, Ontario under the authority of G.O. 69, July 15, 1916. The Battalion sailed March 28, 1917 under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel J.A. Cooper with a strength of 31 officers and 841 other ranks. In England, the Battalion was absorbed into the 3rd Reserve Battalion, with Blake later being transferred to the 19th Infantry Battalion.
