A First War Medal Group to Piper Neilson; Royal Highlanders - 1914-15 Star (419062 Pte D. NEILSON. 42/CAN.INF.); British War Medal (419062 PTE. D. NEILSON. 42-CAN.INF.); and Victory Medal (419062 PTE. D. NEILSON. 42-CAN.INF.). Un-mounted, dark patina and surface wear on the BWM, lacquered, better than very fine. Accompanied by his Statement of Service in the Canadian Armed Forces. Footnote; Duncan Nelson was born on June 25, 1893 in Paisley, Scotland. He signed his Attestation Paper with the 42nd Infantry Battalion "Royal Highlanders of Canada" on June 3, 1915 in Montreal, Quebec, three weeks shy of his eighteenth birthday, naming his next-of-kin as his mother, Agnes Neilson of Montreal, stating that he had four years' previous military service with the 5th Royal Highlanders, that he was not married and that his trade was that of Engraver. A notation in the upper left corner of his Attestation Paper states "by request of Pipe Major for Piper attack of "C" Company". The Battalion was raised in Montreal, Quebec under the authority of G.O. 86, July 1, 1915. The headquarters on mobilization was also Montreal. The Battalion sailed June 10, 1915 with a strength of 45 officers and 978 other ranks under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel G.S. Cantlie. The Battalion served in France and Belgium with the 7th Infantry Brigade, 3rd Canadian Division. Neilson was discharged on February 17, 1920 at Military District No. 2 in Toronto, Ontario, credited with having served in Canada, Great Britain and France. He died on December 24, 1939 in Ste-Anne de Bellevue, Quebec.
