A First War Medal Pair to the 2nd Battalion; KIA on Ypres Salient - British War Medal (412135 PTE. A. MAC NICOLL. 2-CAN.INF.); and Victory Medal (412135 PTE. A. MAC NICOLL. 2-CAN.INF.). Naming is officially impressed. Very crisp detail, light contact, court-mounted with dual push pin reverse, very fine. Accompanied by a CD containing twelve pages with copies of his Attestation Paper, Service Records and Medical Records. Footnote: Alexander MacNicoll was born on October 22, 1893 in Cloyne, Frontenac Shores, Ontario. He signed his Attestation Paper with the 39th Battalion on February 24, 1915 at Belleville, Ontario, stating that he was with an Active Militia, that he was not married and that his trade was that of Gold and Silver Miner. The Battalion was raised in Southeastern Ontario with mobilization headquarters at Belleville, under the authority of G.O. 86, July 1, 1915. The Battalion sailed June 24, 1915 under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel J.A.V. Preston with 40 officers and 1,003 other ranks, including Private MacNicoll, arriving in England on July 3rd. He contracted influenza in September 1915 and was treated for it accordingly. McNicoll was transferred to the 2nd Battalion on October 27th, joining them in the field on November 8th. He was with the Canadian Infantry (Eastern Ontario Regiment) 2nd Battalion in the French theatre when he was initially reported missing and believed killed, then declared Killed in Action, on April 26, 1916. He is remembered with honour at Perth Cemetery (China Wall), Belgium, Grave II. F. 23. The cemetery is located three kilometres east of Ieper town centre, on the Maaldestedestraat, a road leading from the Meenseweg (N8), connecting Ieper to Menen. He is documented as having been eligible for 1914-15 Star, which is not included here, in addition to the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
