A First War Pair to the 19th Canadian Infantry - British War and Victory Medals (814735 PTE. W. PAUL. 19-CAN.INF.). Naming is officially impressed. Original ribbons, mounted to suspension bar with swing bar pinback as worn by veteran, light contact, near very fine. Accompanied by Key Ring with three bakelite Dog Tags (marked "C E, W PAUL, 814735, 19TH CAN.INF." and two keys; 19th Infantry Battalion Cap Badge (browning brass, maker marked J.R. GAUNT LONDON, 37.3 mm x 39.4 mm, one lug intact); 139th Infantry Battalion "Northumberland Battalion" Collar Dog (browning copper, 27.7 mm x 31.2 mm, pinback) and copies of his Attestation Paper, Service Records, Medical Records and Discharge Papers. Footnote: William Paul was born on May 18, 1895 in Norwich, Norfolk, England. He signed his Attestation Paper on November 25, 1915 with the 139th Infantry Battalion in Warkworth, Ontario, stating that he was not married, that he had no previous military service and that his trade was that of Farmer. The Battalion sailed September 27, 1916 from Halifax, Nova Scotia under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel W.H. Floyd with a strength of 21 officers and 495 other ranks, including Paul. They arrived in Liverpool, England aboard the S.S. Southland on October 6, where Paul was transferred to the 36th Reserve Battalion at West Sandling. He was later taken on strength by the 3rd Reserve Battalion on January 4, 1917, and then taken on strength in France by the 19th Infantry Battalion on February 15, 1917 in the field. He spent one and a half years in the French theatre before he was placed with the Canadian Corps Reserve Depot as a Guide on August 2, 1918. Paul transferred to the Canadian Record List on April 5, 1919, as he was taken on strength by N Wing, then by O Wing on April 18 at Witley. Paul returned to Canada, via Liverpool, on May 14, 1919 aboard the S.S. Carolina, where he was discharged from active service upon demobilization on May 24, 1919 at Toronto, Ontario.
