A First World War Trio to the 27th Canadian Infantry - 1914-15 Star (71061 Pte S. GILLIES. 27/CAN:INF:); British War Medal (71061 PTE. S. GILLIES. 27-CAN. INF.); and Victory Medal (71061 PTE. S. GILLIES. 27-CAN. INF.). Naming is officially impressed. Very crisp detail, cleaned, extremely fine. Accompanied by copies of his Index Cards, Attestation Paper, Service Records, Medical Records and Discharge Certificate. Footnote: Somers Gillies was born on January 25th, 1895 in Brighton, Sussex, England. He signed his Attestation Paper on October 27, 1914 in Brandon, Manitoba, at the age of 19, with the 27th Infantry Battalion "City of Winnipeg Regiment", stating that he two years and three months previous military service with the Howe Counties Division (C.A.S.C.), that he was single and that his trade was that of Pattern Maker. The Battalion was raised in Ontario and Manitoba under trhe authority of G.O. 36, March 15, 1915 and sailed for England on May 17, 1915 under the command of Lieutanant-Colonel J.R. Snider with a strength of 33 officers and 1,039 other ranks, including Gillies. The Battalion served in France and Belgium with the 5th Infantry Brigade, 2nd Canadian Division. He embarked for France on September 16, 1915, disembarking at Le Havre on the 17th. Gillies was later awarded a Good Conduct Badge on October 27, 1916. He was hospitalized in September 1917 at Rouen, France with a sprained right ankle, returning to his unit a month afterwards. He later sustained a contusion on the left side of his chest in October 1917 as a result of being thrown from a horse while on duty in France. His medical report dated April 28, 1919 at Witley, stated that the "Pain was quite severe for a few days continuously and has gradually become less severe with time." It appears he remained in the French theatre until February 19, 1919, when he proceeded to England to attend an Army Sports Meet at Oxford Circus House in London. He disembarked Liverpool, England for Canada aboard H.M.T. Northland on May 13, 1919, disemarking in Halifax, Nova Scotia on the 23rd. Gillies was discharged upon demobilization on May 26, 1919 at Dispersal Station "M", Military District No. 10, Winnipeg, Manitoba and was issued the War Service Badge, No. 189665.
