A First War Medal to the 58th Canadian Infantry
(189541 PTE. H.R. ROBERTS. 58-CAN.INF.). Naming is officially impressed. Original ribbon, very dark patina, edge nicks, light contact, near extremely fine. Footnote: Herbert Ray Roberts was born on December 29, 1897 in Sparta, Elgin County, Ontario. He was a resident of Aylmer, Ontario when he signed his Attestation Paper as a Private (189541) with the 91st Infantry Battalion "Elgin Battalion" on December 4, 1915 in St. Thomas, Ontario, at the age of 17, three and a half weeks shy of his eighteenth birthday, naming his next-of-kin as his father, John Roberts of Aylmer, stating that he had no previous military service, that he was not married and that his trade was that of Farmer. The Battalion was raised in Elgin County, Ontario with mobilization headquarters at St. Thomas under the authority of G.O. 151, December 22, 1915. The Battalion sailed on June 28, 1916 from Halifax, Nova Scotia, aboard His Majesty's Transport, the S.S. Olympic, under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel W.J. Green with a strength of 32 officers and 905 other ranks, disembarking at Liverpool, England on July 5th. In England, the Battalion was absorbed into the 12th Reserve Battalion, with Private Roberts later being transferred to the 58th Infantry Battalion and surviving the war.
