A Memorial Cross to the 2nd Canadian Infantry; Battle of the Somme  - British War Medal (8266 Pte T. VANCE. 2/CAN:INF:); and Memorial Cross (8266 Pte. T. VANCE.). Naming is officially impressed on the Star and officially engraved on the Cross. Un-mounted, original ribbon on the Star, the Cross without ribbon, very fine. Footnote: Thomas Vance was born on September 22, 1888 in Flinton, Ontario. He signed his Attestation Paper with the 12th Infantry Battalion, on September 22, 1914 in Valcartier, Quebec, his twenty-sixth birthday, naming his next-of-kin as his mother, Mrs. E. Vance of Belleville, Ontario, stating that he had no previous military service, that he was not married and that his trade was that of Iron Worker. The Battalion was raised in Quebec, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island with mobilization headquarters at Camp Valcartier, under the authority of P.C.O. 2067, August 6, 1914. The Battalion sailed October 3, 1914 under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel H.F. McLeod with a strength of 45 officers and 1,028 other ranks. Upon arrival in England, the 12th Battalion was re-designated the 12th Reserve Battalion forming part of the Canadian Training Depot. Once in the European theatre, Vance was transferred to the 2nd Infantry Battalion, Eastern Ontario Regiment and was Killed in Action on August 1, 1916 during the Battle of Somme. He is buried in Woods Cemetery, near Ieper, Belgium, Grave Reference: II.A.2.
