Fenian Raids and North West Group of Three, Private/Sergeant William H. Denman, No. 2 Company 1st (Prince of Wales Regiment Volunteer Rifles) Battalion, No. 4 Battery Montreal Garrison Artillery: Canada General Service Medal, 1 Clasp - Fenian Raid 1870 (Pte. W.H. Denman, 1st. P.W.R.); North West Canada Medal (REGtl No 10. SGT. W.H. DENMAN. M.G.A. No 4. BATTERY); and Imperial Army and Navy Veterans Medal (bronze gilt, 38.8 mm, three clasps on the ribbon, pinback). Naming is officially impressed on the CGSM and engraved on the NWCM. Un-mounted, original ribbons, dark patinas on the silver medals, edge nicks on the NWCM, contact, better than very fine. Accompanied by a 14th Regiment The Princess of Wales Own Rifles Helmet Plate (blackened bronze, 79.5 mm x 92.5 mm, intact lugs), along with copies of his Service Records, Pay Records and Fenian Raid Service Application for Grant. Footnote: William H. Denman is shown on the roll of the 142 man 1st (Prince of Wales Regiment Volunteer Rifles) Battalion and is listed on page 59 of the "Canada General Service Medal Roll, 1866-70" by John Thyen. In the rank of Private, he received the medal with 1870 clasp while with No. 2 Company, 1st (Prince of Wales Regiment Volunteer Rifles) Battalion, his records indicating he was at St. John, New Brunswick from May 24 to June 4, 1870, with an "Attack expected" and was in "Defence of Frontier". Denman was a Sergeant (regimental number 10) with Number 4 Battery, Montreal Garrison Artillery, confirmed on the roll for the North West Canada Medal (no clasp) and confirmed on the Dominion Forces Pay List, dated June 1 to 30, 1885 at Regina, Saskatchewan. He was a resident of Outremont, Quebec when he filed a Fenian Raid Service Application for Grant, under the provisions of the Fenian Raid Volunteer Bounty Act, on April 27, 1912. (C:14)
