WWI British War Medal - 45th Battalion

WWI British War Medal - (845382 PTE. S.J. TULLOCH. 47-CAN.INF.). Naming is officially impressed. Very crisp detail, original ribbon, extremely fine. Footnote: Samuel John Tullock was born on February 26, 1894, the son of John and Ann Workman, in Sombra Township, Lambton County, Ontario. He signed his Attestation Paper on March 22, 1916 with the 149th Battalion, in Sombra, stating that he has no previous military service, that he was not married and that his trades were that of Farmer and Mechanic. The 149th Battalion was raised in Lambton County, with mobilization headquarters at Watford, under the authority of G.O. 151, December 22, 1915. The Battalion sailed March 28, 1917 under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel G.G.C. Kelly with a strength of 18 officers and 439 other ranks, including Private Tullock. In England, the Battalion was broken up and absorbed into the 4th and 25th Reserve Battalions. He was later transferred to the redesignated "4th Western Ontario Battalion" in February 1918. He was wounded in the European theatre and transferred to England to be treated at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Hampshire. It was here that he died from his wounds, on May 9, 1918. He is buried at the Netley Military Cemetery, Grave N. 405, which is located in Hound, a parish and village on Southampton Water, four miles south-east of Southampton. It is a permanent Ministry of Defence cemetery of seventeen acres, attached to the Royal Victoria Hospital. It was used during both world wars for burials from the hospital.
