Footnote: Alfred Hadland was born in West Ham, Stratford, Essex. Prior to enlisting he worked as a plate layer. He enlisted on September 15, 1902 in Stratford at the age of 20 for 3 years in the army and 9 years in the reserve. He was appointed to the 4th Battalion. He served in South Africa from January 6, 1903 to June 6, 1904. He was transferred to the Army Reserve September 14, 1905. Alfred’s son, Hector William Hadland was born on March 17, 1908 in London, England. He enlisted for service in Vancouver, B.C, Canada on October 1, 1946 and served in the RCASC. He was promoted to Warrant Officer II Class on March 1, 1949 and to Warrant Officer I Class on November 10, 1950. In 1956, WO Hadland was designated with the medical category of L4 because of painful feet. He was henceforth excused from wearing boots and puttees at all times.
