Footnote: Jeffery Scott Upton was born on March 26, 1932, in Galt, Ontario (now part of Cambridge, Ontario), the son of Thomas Frederick Upton and Elsie Maud Jeffery of Galt. He was baptized on June 17, 1932 and received his elementary and secondary schooling in Galt. Upton entered Royal Roads University in Victoria, B.C. in 1951 and graduated Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario 1955, followed by his commissioning in the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) and achieving a Bachelor of Arts at Queen's University in Kingston.
Upton served with the PPCLI in Germany, Calgary, Edmonton, Wainwright (Alberta), then transferred to the Canadian Intelligence Corps Corps in 1958, where he served in Quebec City, Ottawa, Borden, the United Kingdom (MOD = Ministry of Defence), St. Hubert (Quebec), Toronto, Netherlands (HQ, AFCENT = Headquarters, Allied Forces Central Europe) and Montreal. He was also a former Commandant of the Canadian Forces School of Intelligence and Security.
His service later entailed being the Canadian Forces representative on the Organizing Committee, Intelligence Group of the 1976 Summer Olympic Games in Montreal. In 1979, he was seconded to the Privy Council Office and appointed Secretary of the Intelligence Advisory Committee. Upton retired from active service in 1985, at the age of 53. He lived for several years in Pendleton, Ontario and was a member of the Ottawa Diocese Residential School Settlement Commission, as well as Warden of St. Paul's Church in Fenaghvale.
His hobbies included working with stained glass and the restoration of micro cars. He returned to the Ottawa area in 2012 after losing his sight and was the devoted husband of Thérèse Dumas, who predeceased him. Upton died on June 9, 2016, at Queensway Carleton Hospital in Ottawa, Ontario, at the age of 84, and was survived by his beloved caregiver and close friend, Mary Sheffield, his loving daughter Sue and husband Tim Tickner of Hamilton, Ontario, and brother Jim Upton of Montreal, Quebec. A memorial service was held at St. Paul's Anglican Church in Kanata, Ontario on June 14th.
