James Nicol
A Second War group of six, including a 1939-45 Star, a Italy Star, a Defence Medal, a CVSM with overseas bar, and a 1939-45 War Medal, mounted to a suspension with swing bar pinback. Accompanied by a Canadian Memorial Cross, George VI, engraved K66089 Pte. J. NICOL, marked BIRKS STERLING on reverse, on a suspension brooch pin. Accompanied by biographical details, including his pages from Commonwealth War Graves Commission, his records from the Department of National Defence Estates Branch, the original letter of condolence from the Department of National Defence dated 19 August 1943, newspaper clipping depicting James and Arthur, a photograph of his temporary grave marker in Sicily, the original letter from his commanding officer to his parents dated 2 August 1943, and an excerpt from G.R. Stevens’ Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry 1919-1957, Volume Three. With a summary of service record including duplicates of his Attestation Paper, Enrolment Form, Medical Examination and Certificate Form, and Service and Casualty Forms.
Arthur Nicol

Footnote: Private James (Jim) Nicol was born to parents Robert B. Nicol (1887-1964) and Ann (nee Clark) Nicol on 16 August 1911 in Vancouver, British Columbia. James’ parents made their home in Vancouver after immigrating to Canada from Scotland. His father Robert was a gardener and the family resided at 1339 East 24th Avenue. After graduating with his Grade 8 from General Wolfe Elementary, James worked as a logger and truck driver. Prior to enlisting, he was an employee of Hammond Hardwood Mills, Ltd. James enlisted on 10 August 1942 and served with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, RCIC. He was Killed in Action on 22 July 1943 in the Sicily Campaign and buried in the Agira Canadian War Cemetery, Sicily. Private Arthur Nicol was born to parents Robert B. Nicol (1887-1964) and Ann (nee Clark) Nicol on 7 August 1918 in Vancouver, British Columbia. James’ parents made their home in Vancouver after immigrating to Canada from Scotland. His father Robert was a gardener and the family resided at 1339 East 24th Avenue. Arthur attended General Wolfe Elementary and King Edward High School. He worked as a waiter and golf club steward until enlisting on 5 March 1940. Arthur serviced with the 1st Division CASF Seaforth Highlanders of Canada. He was Killed in Action on 17 December 1943 and buried in the Morro River Cemetery, Ortona, Italy.
