A First War 1st Canadian Division Headquarters and Elements Helmet
British-made, steel, non-magnetic, in dark brownish-green with a smooth finish, a red rectangle painted on the front representative of the 1st Canadian Division, Division Headquarters and Elements. The protective edge of the helmet in a magnetic steel. Inside, steel-framed cradle supporting a blackened canvas liner with underlying burlap support and leather backer, mesh support with drawstring, stamped "HS 458" ("HS" indicating the manufacturer, Hadfield Limited of Sheffield (1916-1919); and "458" the steel batch number) on the underside of the helmet at the back, and stamped in red ink on the underside of the blackened liner with the manufacturer's stamp. The leather chinstrap has been lost to time, with only a stub present on the left side but the hardware remains intact. Helmet measures 290 mm x 312 mm x 120 mm, exhibiting bubbling, contact marks and paint chipping on the exterior, with traces of the red paint of the 1st Canadian Division insignia remaining, wear evident along the edge of the liner, as worn.
