A 1912 Dominion of Canada Civilian Rifle Associations Award Plate
Charlottetown Rifle Association 1912: Silver plated brass, weighing 1,024 grams, maker marked "BIRKS" on the obverse, scallop-shaped bowl with a crest in the centre, the crest illustrating the quartered Canadian coat-of-arms, with the four provincial coat-of-arms, clock-wise from the top left: Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, within a frame formed by two branches of maple leaves, surrounded by a flowing ribbon banner inscribed "PRESENTED BY THE DOMINION OF CANADA TO MEMBERS OF CIVILIAN RIFLE ASSOCns FOR SKILL IN RIFLE SHOOTING / WON BY" and engraved to "R.V. LONGWORTH CHARLOTTETOWN RIFLE ASSOc 1912", raised rim designed with five points, each of the five points with a cluster of three maple leaves in raised relief, the cluster above the Canadian coat-of-arms surmounted by crossed rifles and fronted by a ringed target within a square, the entire edge of the rim trimmed in a flowing design simulating maple leaf branches, measuring 285 mm in diameter at its widest point, light contact on the obverse, multiple contact marks on the reverse, near extremely fine.
Footnote: R.V. Longworth is listed in the 1915 Province of Prince Edward Island Yearbook as being the First President of the Prince Edward Island Poultry Association. Until 1921, the quartered arms of the first four provinces continued to be the only legally sanctioned coat of arms for the Dominion of Canada.
