First War Royal Air Force Veteran's Photo Album - This album contains 307 black and white photographs of various sizes and subject matter, some of which exhibit a sepia-toned look, most with a matte finish, a few with a gloss finish. The photographs document the travels of a Canadian who was in the Royal Air Force during the Great War. Included are photos of various aeroplanes: on the ground, in the air, "zooming" and "spinning", crash landed, some upside down, one of two crashed planes described as "They met, sky not large enough", another of an Avro crashed into another Avro while on the ground, along with a crumpled skeleton of a plane. Featured are Allied aeroplanes (Avro, B.E.-2.C, Bristol Bullet, Bristol Fighter, Bristol Scout, Curtiss Flying Boat with Sopwith "Kitten" on top, Curtiss J.N. (with "Eberts Field, Lonoka, Ark" (Arkansas) and "Kokomo Aviation Co, Kokomo Ind" (Indiana) on the side), D.H.-4, D.H.-6, D.H.-9, D.H.-9.A, F.E.-2.C, F.E.-2.D, Handley Page (one with wings folded back), Maurice Farman Longhorn, R.E.-8, S.E.-5, Sopwith Camel, Sopwith Dolphin, Sopwith Pup, Sopwith Triplane, Vickers Scout), along with a German "Pfaltz". Most of the photos are taken at ground level, but many are aerial views (e.g. a ground target taken with a camera gun, gas attacks, Mericourt Switch and Ostend). Additional subjects include: places (Oxford, Sandgate from the West, Shorncliffe, three "Rookies" at Long Branch Camp, Waddington Aerodrome in Lincoln County, Ross Barracks at Shorncliffe, an aerial view of farmland an an aerodrome); many historical sites (Abbey at Bath, the Circus at Bath, Ely Cathedral, Salisbury Cathedral, Victory Arch in London, Albert Hall, Albert Memorial opposite Alberta Hall at Hyde Park in London, an aerial view of Lord Landsdowne's Estate near Yatesbury); the Quebec City area (Quarantine Boat at Quebec City, St. Andrew's Church, St. Louis Gate, view from the Citadel, Montmorency Falls, along with a series of eight photos illustrating the Quebec Bridge under construction to its completion); views on board ship (the S.S. Canada, including one of the passengers in "amusement"); the Connaught Railway Tunnel in British Columbia; many with a nautical theme: three camouflaged vessels (a boat in a channel, a freighter, British battleship on the St. Lawrence River at Quebec City), British Destroyers as Escorts to a Convoy, HMS Invictus and other ships in the canal at Zeebruge, a British Ensign above a German Kreigsmarine Flag on a Sub, a Gunner and his "Pet" (Navy Artillery Gun), a four masted schooner); two photos of the Royal North West Mounted Police (one of H.R.H. inspecting the RNWMP at Regina, Saskatchewan on October 6, 1919, the other a group shot of six ex-RNWMP in the Royal Air Force returning to Canada); many of people (celebrating Armistice Day in London on November 11, 1918, officers (one of which is putting on a flying coat), Male Staff at Ogden School, nurses, family photos (in summer and winter, with men, women and children, young and old, one of a woman wading in water, three vignetted photos of a woman, a woman with child and nurse), animals (dogs, swans, sheep and goats), plus automobiles, houses, brick buildings and tropical settings. Also included are two colourized postcards. All items are pasted in place on black photograph quality paper pages, the album measuring 177 mm x 295 mm x 37 mm in height, embossed "Snapshots" on the front cover, both covers have brushed green suede exteriors with black cloth undersides, with three black eyelets on both covers and a green cord binding. A terrific Great War collectible, extremely fine.
