(Orden Imperial del Águila Mexicana). Instituted by Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico in 1865, unofficially abolished in 1867. 1865-1867 Issued. In silver gilt, and characteristic of French Manufacture, a beautiful Grand Cross sash badge presenting a highly detailed Mexican eagle placed on a nicely enamelled green cactus, exhibiting gilded sword and ceremonial mace held between its claws, as well as an enamelled green snake clutched by its beak and talons, the wings and back of the eagle have been hand etched resulting in lovely light catching details, surmounted by an enamelling-detailed Imperial crown with integral ring, measuring 39.02mm (w) x 68.97mm (h – inclusive of integral ring atop crown suspension), 44.3 grams, two minor enamel flakes on reverse of cactus, otherwise, a rare decoration in near mint condition.
Accompanied by a long section of original (unfinished) sash, in extremely fine condition.
