Mexico, Independence. A Medal of Independence by J. Guerrero, Troops Version, c.1821

(Medalla de la Independencia). Instituted 1821. 1821-1825 issue. In bronze, depicting in the obverse two separated hemispheres with a broke chain between them, beneath of three areolas featuring the words RELIGION - INDEPENDENCIA - UNION (Religion Independence, Unity), surrounded by the inscription CON LA TRIPLE GARANTIA - DESATO A UN ORBE DEL OTRO (With the Triple Guarantee - One Orb was Separated of the Other), reverse depicting wreath, surmounted by the inscription PRIMERA EPOCA (First Epoch), marked by maker’s mark J. GUERRERO, one of the most active Mexican engraver of the time, measuring 49.86 mm (w) x 59.98 mm (h - inclusive of the integral ring), with minor wear in the edges, very unique, very fine.

Footnote: The Medal of Independence was instituted in Mexico on October 12, 1821. It was founded to award the troops under the officer’s rank who swore loyalty to Iturbe, and the independence of Mexico from Spanish crown.

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
