Mexico, Independence. A Medal of Independence, Troops Version, by J. Guerrero, c.1821
(Medalla de la Independencia). Instituted 1821. 1821-1825 issue. Constructed of cooper, the obverse depicting two separated hemispheres with a broke chain between them, beneath of three areolas inscribed RELIGION - INDEPENDENCIA - UNION (Religion Independence, Unity) in each one, surrounded by the inscription CON LA TRIPLE GARANTIA - DESATO A UN ORBE DEL OTRO (With the Triple Guarantee - One Orb was Separated of the Other), reverse centre featuring a tied wreath surmounted by the inscription SEGUNDA EPOCA (Second Epoch), stamped by maker’s mark J. GUERRERO, one of the most active Mexican engraver of the time, measuring 50.07 mm (w) x 61.67 mm (h - inclusive of the integral ring), with minor toned metal and wear surfaces, very rare, better than fine. Footnote: The Medal of Independence was instituted in Mexico on October 12, 1821. It was founded to award the troops under the officer’s rank who swore loyalty to Iturbe, and the independence of Mexico from Spanish crown. The Medal was awarded in two different epochs. The First Epoch consisted of the awards granted between March 2, and June 15, 1821. While, the Second Epoch included the awards granted between June 15, and September 2, 1821.
