A Second War "The Italians to the Heroic 8th Army" Commemorative Medal
Bronze gilt, obverse illustrating Mount Vesuvius across the Bay of Naples, a sunrise with emanating rays in the background, reverse inscribed "THE ITALIANS TO THE HEROIC 8TH ARMY" with arabesques above and below, 30.2 mm, without ring, contact marks and surface wear, near very fine. Footnote: Naples fell to the United States 23rd Armoured Brigade on October 1, 1943 and was subsequently occupied by the United States 82nd Airborne until their transfer a month later, in preparation for the Normandy landings. The 8th Army meanwhile held a line from Benevento eastwards to the Adriatic and it is assumed that the medal dates from late 1943, as a result of an initiative to express gratitude for liberation from occupying German forces, but from whom and to whom it was given remains a mystery.
