United States. A Purple Heart to Technician Moore, 635th Tank Destroyer Battalion, Battle of the Bulge DOW
Two-piece construction, in bronze gilt with purple, red, white and green enamels, engraved "LIONEL E. MOORE" on the reverse, measuring 35.5 mm (w) x 43.5 mm (h), intact enamels, original ribbon with brooch pinback, extremely fine. In its hardshelled case of issue, marked "PURPLE HEART" on the lid, case also extremely fine.
Footnote: The 635th Tank Destroyer Battalion was established on December 15, 1941 at Camp Robertson, Arkansas, from the 35th Infantry Division Antitank Battalion (Provisional). The battalion arrived in Liverpool, England, on February 19, 1944, and almost four months later, landed at Omaha Beach on June 8th. They advanced through northern France and Belgium, eventually operating in the Roetgen-Aachen sector and Hürtgen Forest during the Fall. They were transferred to Belgium on December 22nd during the Battle of the Bulge. Technician Fifth Grade Lionel E. Moore, 635th Tank Destroyer Battalion died from his wounds, on December 23, 1944. After his death, his battalion would return to the Aachen area in January and support the drive toward the Rhine River near Cologne. The battalion was transferred to the Seventh Army and almost immediately to the Third Army on April 1, 1945. They crossed the Rhine at Mannheim and advanced through central Germany to Austria, supporting the 1st and 71st Infantry divisions, along with the 4th Cavalry Group.
