A Vietnam Casualty Group to Sgt.Tilley; 1st Cavalry Division - Bronze Star (bronze, 36 mm x 37 mm); Purple Heart (bronze gilt and enamels, un-named, 35.2 mm x 43.8 mm); Air Medal (bronze, 42 mm); National Defense Service Medal (bronze, 32 mm); and Vietnam Service Medal (bronze, 32 mm). Un-mounted, on original ribbons with brooch pinbacks, better than extremely fine. Accompanied by his Bronze Star Certificate (for heroism in ground combat in Vietnam on January 18, 1968, dated August 9, 1968, 254 mm x 305 mm), his Purple Heart Certificate (for wounds received in action in Vietnam on January 18, 1968, dated February 19, 1968, 254 mm x 305 mm) and his Air Medal Certificate (for meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight from October 1967 to November 1967 in the Republic of Vietnam, as a Specialist Four E-4, dated December 18, 1967, 254 mm x 305 mm).   Footnote: 54957623 Sergeant James A. Tilley was born on August 8, 1947 and was a resident of Livonia, Michigan and married when he enlisted with the Army. He began his tour of duty in the Vietnam theatre on September 1, 1967, which was to last only 139 days. He was with 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), "C" Company, 1st Battalion, 50th Infantry in Pleiku Province, when he was killed in action on January 18, 1968 at the age of 20, listed as a "ground casualty" (classified as Casualty Type A1 = hostile enemy fire) due to "small arms fire".Tilley is remembered with honor on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Panel 34E, Row 071.
