Footnote: Congress authorized the current and only style of the Air Force Medal of Honor on July 6, 1960. The medal was designed by the United States Army Institute of Heraldry and replaced the Army design of the Medal of Honor, as the award given to members of the Air Force after November 1, 1965. It is awarded for acts of personal bravery or self-sacrifice during combat that are so conspicuous as to clearly distinguish the individual for gallantry and intrepidity above his comrades.
