MORRIS" "MONTICELLO" on the edge, engraved on the reverse "ENSIGN JOSEPH WARE", 33 mm, on original ribbon with brooch pinback); and Military Order of the Loyal Legion, Commander, Commandery of New York (GOLD and enamels, weighing 8.2 grams, issued in 1893, numbered "10086" on the loop, 31.8 mm, on original full length neck ribbon). Fine quality, better than extremely fine. Accompanied by five original documents including: Navy Department Transmittal Letter Accompanying the Civil War Campaign Medal (inscribed "Sir: The Bureau transmits herewith a Civil War Campaign Badge (No. 445) conferred upon you in accordance with the provisions of an Act of Congress approved May 13, 1908, directing the preparation and distribution of badges to the officers and men of the Navy and Marine Corps of the United States who participated in engagements and campaigns deemed worthy of such commemoration. The badge issued to you is in recognition of your services during the Civil War. For the purpose of identification this badge is marked with a number on the rim, which is recorded. The Bureau authorizes you to also engrave on the rim of this badge your name, rank at that time, and the name of the vessel to which you were attached. Harcourt, signed and dated June 4, 1864, 196 mm x 247mm); Letter Appointing Ware in Command of U.S.S. Harcourt (to proceed to Hampton Roads, Virginia, embossed stamped, signed and dated June 4, 1864, 200 mm x 251 mm); Navy Department Detachment Letter (detaching Ware from U.S.S. Monticello and granting him two months leave, signed and dated July 18, 1865, 208 mm x 340 mm); Navy Pension Certificate (numbered "39,767" and marked "Reissue", granting Ware the sum of twenty-four dollars per month in pension, paid quarterly, beginning on June 17, 1912, embossed stamped, signed and dated April 23, 1913, 203 mm x 279 mm, with three additional papers inside, rodent chewing in the upper right corner). All five documents with expected fold marks and creases from storage. Also included are a copy of Ware's Military Order of the Loyal Legion Record (Elected a Companion on April 5, 1893, document dated November 28, 1893); Civil War Library and Museum, Philadelphia, Pa. Letter (dated March 20, 1987, confirming the Mollus); Cabinet Photograph of Ware as a Mature Man (black and white, studio stamped "Buxbaum 927 B'WAY BROOKLYN, N.Y." in the lower right corner, 150 mm x 119 mm); plus assorted research papers regarding all five ships on which he served during the war.
