In bronze gilt with purple, red, white and green enamels, engraved "GEORGE J. CURTIS" on the reverse, measuring 35 mm (w) x 43 mm (h), chipping evident in the purple enamels on the right side, scattered gilt wear, contact marks, fine.
Footnote: Curtis served in the U.S. Army. He served as a corporal in the U. S. Army infantry, 91st Greentree Division in Italy. He earned the Combat Infantry Badge and his unit received the Presidential Unit Citation. After six months on the front lines he was wounded in action and was transferred to the Provost Marshall’s office where he completed his tour of duty. Interestingly, at the time, he refused the Purple Heart because he was concerned that the notification back home would upset his mother.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
