This pocket watch is chrome-plated brass, non-magnetic, functional and weighing 111.3 grams. The white porcelain face has bold numerals in black, with a ring above marked with black rules in intervals of sixty minutes, the hour and minute hands in black, in the "baton" style. The "6" position and part of the "5" and "7" positions are obscured by the inset second hand clock with a black secondhand, maker marked "HAMILTON" and covered by a glass crystal. The reverse exterior cover is engraved "BUREAU OF SHIPS / U.S. NAVY COMPARING WATCH", along with an "N" within a circle (representing the United States Naval Observatory). The inside of the reverse exterior cover is marked "KEYSTONE" above a Keystone insignia, marked "BASE METAL" and numbered "96762", and when removed, exposes the dust cover. Upon removal of the dust cover, the inner works of the watch are exposed. The inside works is maker marked "HAMILTON WATCH CO. U.S.A.", "ADJ. TEMP. AND 3 POS.", "2974B", "17 JEWELS" and "U.S. GOVT." (United States Government). It also comes with a reeded chrome-plated brass ball finial stem and a chrome-plated trapezoid-shaped ring suspension, measuring 51.5 mm (w) x 57.5 mm (h) inclusive of its stem x 16.5 mm (d).
