United States. An Army First Lieutenant's Field or Coastal Artillery Units Side Cap (AKA Garrison Cap)
Fabricated from an olive green wool with fold down flaps also in olive green wool on either side, with two rising peaks forming a valley between the two panels, the panels sewn together via black threading in two locations, the top edge of the flaps trimmed in red piping which denotes field or coastal artillery units, with a 8.5 mm (w) x 18 mm (h) silver First Lieutenant's rank insignia pinned in place on the left side. The inside is lined in a gold-coloured rayon, the 43 mm wide sweatband also in a matching gold-coloured rayon with a white mesh cotton backer. The cap measures 285 mm (w) x 130 mm (h), exhibiting scattered interruptions in the fabric on both sides on the exterior, with light soiling and wear on the sweatband from active use. Very fine.
