United States. A United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) L-1 Flight Suit by S.J. Campbell Company
This is an extremely well-preserved United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) L-1 flight suit, constructed of olive-drab gabardine cotton twill. The suit is opened by a functional metal zipper that extends from the collar to the fly, while both shoulders bear diagonal pockets, similarly opening with functional metal zippers. The cuff of each sleeve has a reinforced buttonhole meeting dual brown bakelite buttons, allowing for an adjustable fit. Each armpit features four ventilation holes, reinforced with gilded bronze eyelets. The waistband has an integrated belt system, with each side flanked by a strap with a reinforced buttonhole meeting three brown bakelite buttons. Underneath the waistband are dual side pockets, opening with vertical slits that are closed by brown bakelite buttons hidden inside the interior. Above the left pocket is a brown leather clip extending downwards. Additional pockets are located at the shin of both legs, opening with horizontally-arranged, functional metal zippers. Additional vertical slits at the ankles, opening with functional metal zippers, allow for the expansion of each leg. The interior of the suit presents plain with the exception of an integrated suspension loop at the reverse of the collar, as well as a manufacturer’s label maker marked “S.J. CAMPBELL COMPANY”, with a model number of “L-1” and a serial number indicating manufacture in 1945. The suit measures approximately 49.5 cm across the shoulders, with an arm length of 63 cm and an overall length of 150 cm. Two small holes are evident to the exterior waistband, but the suit is in an overall extremely fine condition.
