United States; China, Republic. A Second War China Theater-Made Flying Tigers CBI Officer's Visor Cap
The exterior is fabricated from a dark khaki cotton, featuring the classic high peak, with a 48 mm wide band in khaki cotton around its circumference, the bottom edge of which is trimmed in a 10 mm band in dark khaki cotton. There is a 74 mm (w) x 65 mm (h) Chinese Air Force Commissioned Officer's cap badge sewn in place on the front, the cap badge insignia in silvered and gold-coloured bullion wire in various textures, with blue threading outlining the sun, the sun's background in purple embroidery, along with black threading giving definition to the wings, the insignia stitched in place to a black wool base. The stiff visor is finished in a black vulcan fibre on the upper, the front edge of the visor trimmed in a strip of black simulated leather. There is a strap in leather with a smooth black finish and raw underside, that has dual adjustable sliders that match the strap, running across the front between the bronze gilt buttons on either side, each of the buttons bearing the Republic of China sun insignia, the underside of the visor in a forest green synthetic fibre. Inside, the underlying stiff framework on the sidewalls is wrapped in a dark khaki cotton. The upper edge embodies a piece of thin wooden dowel along the entire circumference to give it definition, along with a support to house the dowel in the raised portion at the front that is covered in dark khaki cotton and placed behind the cap badge. It incorporates a 35 mm wide leather sweatband with a smooth tawny brown upper and raw underside, the ends of which are stitched together at the rear, with a paper metric size label marked "57" (= U.S. size 7 1/8) glued in place beside the seam at the rear. The cap measures 240 mm in width x 250 mm in depth x 130 mm in height, is free of mothing and is relatively clean given its age, exhibiting crazing and scuffing in the black vulcan fibre upper on the visor. Better than very fine.
