A New Zealand 21st Battalion Cassino Casuality Group - 1939-1945 Star; Africa Star with 8th Army Clasp; Italy Star; War Medal 1939-1945 with MID Oak Leaf; New Zealand War Service Medal 1939-1945; and New Zealand Memorial Cross (65088 PTE. P.G. SAMSON M.1.D.). Naming is impressed on the NZMC. Un-mounted, sticker silhouettes on the reverse of the stars from previous board mounting, better than extremely fine. Accompanied by a New Zealand 2nd Expeditionary Force Cap Badge and a 16th (Waikato) Regiment Cap Badge (both are bronze gilt, unmarked, 33.2 mm x 43.8 mm and 36.5 mm x 41 mm respectively, intact lugs).Footnote: 65088 Private Patrick George Samson was the son of Cecil Samson and of Margaret Samson (nee McCormack) of Gisborne, Auckland, New Zealand. He enlisted with the New Zealand Infantry at Club Hotel, Onehunga, Auckland and was placed with the 21st Battalion, 6th Brigade, 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force, naming his next-of-kin as his aunt, Mrs. E. Ovington of Wilde's Meadow, Moss Vale, New South Wales, Australia and his trade as that of Labourer. During the war, he was Mentioned in Despatches, as confirmed by the oak leaf on his War Medal 1939-1945. Samson was Killed in Action during the Battle of Monte Cassino, Italy on March 18, 1944, at the age of 28. He is remembered with honour at the Cassino War Cemetery, Grave Reference: VI. D. 21. In addition, his name appears on the Onehunga War Memorial Plaque at the Onehunga War Memorial Swimming Pool, Jellicoe Park, Park Gardens, Onehunga, Auckland, New Zealand.
