Portugal, Kingdom. An Order of Vila Viçosa, I Class Grand Cross Sash, c.1900

(Ordem de Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Vila Viçosa). Instituted in 1818. A period sash section, fabricated from silk, incorporating a decorative moiré pattern, with a wide light blue field flanked by wide white stripes along the edges, a large bow-tied rosette sewn in place near the bottom end for the placement of the badge, measuring 100 mm wide x 260 mm in length, intact stitching, exhibiting soiling, very fine. Accompanied by a medical doctor's paper prescription with a masthead inscribed "ALBERT A. GGODWIN, M. D. / 31 KINGSBORO AVENUE / GLOVERSVILLE, N. Y. / OFFICE HOURS BY APPOINTMENT", with "Portugal / Villa Viscosa" written in Dr. Goodwin's own handwriting in the prescription area, printed in black ink, on a faded white paper stock, with a period paper clip attached, measuring 92 mm (w) x 127 mm (h).

Footnote: The Order of the Immaculate Conception of Vila Viçosa was instituted on February 6, 1818 and discontinued on October 15, 1910 as a Portuguese Order, but retained as a Dynastic Order of the House of Braganza, the former Portuguese Royal Family. It was awarded for services rendered to the Royal House in four grades: Grand Cross, Commander, Knight and Servant.

 

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
