Footnote: The Medal for Distinguished Overseas Service was instituted on January 11, 1891, initially awarded to military personnel who took part in overseas operations in Africa, and later, to military personnel in other overseas locations, in two classes: Distinct Service Class and Persistence Service Class, each of which comes in three grades: I Class Gold Grade, II Class Silver Grade and III Class Bronze Grade.
