Russia, Imperial. An 1834 Medal for Victory at the Battle of Krasnoi
Constructed of bronze, the obverse bearing a raised and leftward-facing profile of Tsar Alexander I in medieval armour and wielding a spear with an ornately-decorated shield executed in high relief, circumscribed by a Russian Cyrillic inscription of “РОДОМЫСЛЪ ДЕВЯТАГОНАДЕСЯТЬ ВѢКА” (“RODOMYSL OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY”), the reverse bearing a raised and exceptionally detailed depiction of a helmeted warrior using a sword to strike an enemy combatant, the latter wielding a shield bearing a French emblem, with additional figures huddling in the background, circumscribed by Cyrillic inscriptions indicating that the medal was issued in 1834 to commemorate Russia’s victory at the Battle of Krasnoi in November 1812, the obverse bearing a possible engraver’s mark that appears to read “РАКЛЕ”, measuring 66 mm in diameter, in extremely fine condition.
