Russia, Imperial. An 1835 Medal for Victory at the Battle of the Katzbach
Constructed of bronze, the obverse bearing a raised and leftward-facing profile of Tsar Alexander I in medieval armour and wielding a spear with an ornately-decorated shield executed in high relief, circumscribed by a Russian Cyrillic inscription of “РОДОМЫСЛЪ ДЕВЯТАГОНАДЕСЯТЬ ВѢКА” (“RODOMYSL OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY”), the reverse bearing a raised and exceptionally detailed depiction of two warriors advancing with swords and shields at the ready, trampling over fallen enemy combatants, circumscribed by Cyrillic inscriptions indicating that the medal was issued in 1835 to commemorate Russia’s victory at the Battle of the Katzbach on 26 August 1813, the obverse bearing a possible engraver’s mark that appears to read “РАКЛЕ”, measuring 65 mm in diameter, in extremely fine condition.
