Russia, Imperial. An 1874 Medal for the Visit of Tsar Alexander II to London, by Charles Wiener
Constructed of bronze, the obverse bearing a raised and leftward-facing profile of Tsar Alexander II in high relief and exceptional detail, circumscribed by name and title in Latin, the reverse bearing a raised female personification of peace bringing together the Tsar and Queen Victoria, the latter clutching a shield bearing the coat of arms of London and flanked by cherubs, with the scene circumscribed by a Latin dedication to the Tsar in his capacity as emancipator of the serfs and guests of a free people, above an inscription of “LONDON” and date of 18 May 1874 in Roman numerals, double maker marked “WIENER” for Charles Wiener, Brussels, measuring 76 mm in diameter, in extremely fine condition.
