Russia, Imperial. An 1886 Medal for the Dedication of the Russo-Turkish War Memorial Column in St. Petersburg
Constructed of bronze, the obverse bearing raised and rightward-facing profiles of Tsars Alexander II and Alexander III, circumscribed by a circular laurel and oak leaf wreath in addition to names and titles in Cyrillic, the reverse bearing a raised and exceptionally-detailed depiction of the original Russo-Turkish War Memorial column in St. Petersburg, notably constructed of captured Turkish cannon, flanked by Cyrillic inscriptions indicating that the medal was struck for the dedication of the memorial erected between 1885 and 1886 in commemoration of the 1877-1878 Russo-Turkish War, topped by an additional name and title of Tsar Alexander III, the reverse engraver marked “АВЕНИРЪ ГРИЛИХЕС” (“AVENIR GRILICHES”), measuring 71.95 mm in diameter, in extremely fine condition.
